Permanent Side Effect Linked to Levaquin

              An antibiotic used to treat an array of bacterial infections among adults was approved recently by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for children.

Levaquin levofloxacin is part of the fluoroquinolone group of oral medications prescribed to treat acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, noscocomial pneumonia, community-acquired pneumonia, complicated skin and skin structure infections, mild to moderate uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, chronic bacterial prostates, urinary tract infections and acute pyelonephritis caused by Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli, which is an infection affecting the lower intestines of humans and highly associated with food poisonings in the United States. The drugLevaquin, which is manufactured by from pharmaceutical firm Ortho-McNeil, was approved in 1996, but the oral solution was introduced in 2004 and this was followed by a 750-milligrams (mg) five-day oral treatment becoming widely available in 2005, although the Levaquin is also available intravenously as well.

While Levaquin is prescribed for an array of bacterial infections, it has also been approved to treat the effects of airborne anthrax. It was also recently approved for the use by in treating children as an anti-bacterial component and as a treatment of anthrax contamination among children as well. The drug is absorbed quickly, particularly after oral consumption and is usually allotted in 500 mg to 750 mg doses.

According to manufacturers, individuals who have kidney disease, diabetes, spinal or brain cord conditions are highly recommended to avoid the drug as it could cause serious side eaffects including:

* slow absorption of in kidney disease patients

* blood level spikes and irregularities of in diabetes patients

* uncontrollable seizures among spinal and brain injury patients

Levaquin Side Effects

According to manufacturers, the most common adverse drug reactions Levaquin side effects that occurred in U.S. individuals who underwent a Levaqin clinical trial experienced insomnia and dizziness as well as diarrhea, nausea and constipation. Additionally, the list of side effects continues to grow and patients thatwith exude any of the following symptoms should stop taking the medication and seek medical assistance immediately:

* abdominal tenderness, cramping or severe pain

* confusion, hallucinations or psychosis

* diarrhea (which may be bloody)

* fever

* blisters, redness and swelling of the skin

* sensation of burning skin

* trembling or seizures

* vomiting

* easy bruising or bleeding

* jaundice

* numbness in limbs, tingling in fingers

* swelling, pain in legs/muscles

Recent studies have also suggested that individuals with preexisting conditions (previously mentioned) as well as individuals taking specific types of medicine may increase their risk of these Levaquin side effects causing severe medical trauma.

Complications may occur when use of Levaquin is combined with:

* blood thinners (warfarin/coumadin)

* cyclosporine

* insulin

* theophylline

* aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

* heart rhythm medications (Cordarone, Pacerone, etc.)

* antacids (Tums, Rolaids)

* ulcer medication (Carafate)

* didanosine (Videx)

* vitamins or supplements containing iron or zinc

Levaquin Tendon Rupture Risks

The most serious Levaquin side effect is the risk of Achilles tendonitis among current and former patients of Levaquin levofloxacin. Several studies published in accredited medical journals including the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, The Annals of Pharmacotherapy and Tthe Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology have all cited case studies in which individuals who have taken Levaquin have been adversely affected by levofloxacin-induced tendonopathy and tendon rupture.

According to the report from The Journal of American Board of Family Medicine, the onset of tendon ruptures among patients characteristically is abrupt in onset causing extreme sharp pains and swelling of legs when walking. The study also reports that while most of the tendonitis among Leva

quin patients occurs within the first two weeks of taking the drug., Hhowever, it can occur in patients long after the drug’s cycle has been completed.

In some patients, the Levaquin tendon ruptures occurred longer than six months after treatment administration of the drug. The study noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that in 1991, tendon rupture could be a risk of quinolone drugs.

Although it wasn’t until 1996 when the FDA issued its first “Report of adverse Events” on the fluoroquinolones. In a 10-year period, at least 200 reports of Achilles tendonitis have occurred in association with Levaquin. Additionally, a report from the United Kingdom found that levofloxacin-induced tendonitis potentially affects approximately 3.2 out of approximatly every 1,000 Levaquin patients who have taken the drug at some point.

Victims of Levaquin Risks

Individuals who have previously been exposed totaken Levaquin, whether through intravenous or oral methods, should speak with their physician to asses any potential risk. Additionally, patients may which to consult with an experienced Levaquin lawyer a pharmaceutical lawyer especially if any of the previous symptoms have occurred. Additionally, because of the severity of tendonitis and potential long-term damage done, it is important for an individual to consider seeking out compensation in the form of a Levaquin Lawsuit that may provide monetary relief from the extensive surgical and medical procedures likely associated with solving or easing the pain of tendonitis caused through a prescription of Levaquinby having taken Levaquin.

Fosamax Reportedly Linked to Dangerous Side Effects

The osteoporosis drug Fosamax was recently delivered a “one-two punch” regarding severe dangers associated with the drug. First, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that nearly 23 instances of esophageal cancer have been reported as a side effect of Fosamax. Then, in an issue of the American Dental Association, were reports that the drug’s jaw die off risk is actually more common than initially thought. The jaw bone die off is actually known as a disease that affects around 20,000 Americans each year and is osteonecrosis.

The link of the most recent findings to the Fosamax drug from Merck and Co. increases the list of Fosamax risks associated with the drug since it became available on the market. Fosamax, which is the generic name for Alendronate, that became available in 2001, is often prescribed to osteoporosis patients as well as postmenopausal women who suffer from bone density loss.

An ABC news report on the drug and the recent studies speculated on the potential upcoming public perception of Fosamax and how the “one-two punch” may affect the company. One ABC News contributor, Dr. Marie Savard, said that the jaw bone die off may be “the tip of the iceberg… the drugs do change bone structure and growth.”

Developing Osteonecrosis

According to the National Osteonecrosis Foundation and the Center of Osteonecrosis Research and Education, the condition commonly affects individuals between the ages of 20 and 50 years old, most often affecting individuals in their late 30s. The disease is described as “death of bone which can occur from the loss of the blood supply or by some other means.” The following are potential causes of the condition:

* dislocations

* caisson disease

* sickle cell disease

* post-irradiation

* chemotherapy

* arteial disease

* gaucher?s disease

* alcohol

* lipid disturbances

* connective tissue disease

* liver disease

* kidney disease

* lupus

* smoking

* pancreatitis

* blood clotting disorders

* corticosteroids in high dosages

If an individual feels they may be a victim of the condition, there are several steps that can be taken to diagnose osteonecrosis including:

* X-ray

* magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

* bone scan

* computed tomography (CT)

* biopsy

Details of Esophageal Cancer and Fosomax

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines esophageal cancer as “a cancer that forms in tissues lining the esophagus, which is the muscular tube through which food passes from the throat to the stomach.” It is estimated that in 2008 approximately 16,470 individuals will suffer from a new esophageal cancer diagnosis and approximately 14,280 deaths will result from this cancer, which is a fatality rate of nearly 86 percent.

Esophageal cancer can be treated in a variety of ways including immuno therapy and vaccine therapy as well as chemotherapy and radiation. Additionally, the NCI reported that “when esophageal cancer is found very early, there is a better chance of recovery… and at later stages, esophageal cancer can be treated but rarely can be cured.”

Receive Fosamax Assistance

Patients who currently suffer from the severe Fosamax risks can find relief by contacting a medical professional immediately to halt consumption of the drug as well as to locate an experienced medical attorney specializing in pharmaceutical dangers such as that associated with Fosamax.

Locating a pharmaceutical lawyer with knowledge of Fosamax may alleviate the pain endured by a Fosamax victim as well as increase the chances of earning monetary compensation.

However, there are more deaths from this form of cancer each year in the United States than from endometrial cancer and cervical cancer combined. Cervical Cancer Treatment Side Effects The lifetime risk of developing spontaneous ovarian cancer is about 1.7%. Epithelial ovarian cancer was expected cause 15,520 deaths in 2008. Mean age at diagnosis is 60. There has been a significant improvement in the five year survival rate for patients with ovarian cancer. This is likely a combination of better tumor debulking surgeries and better chemotherapeutic options.

Most patients with this type of ovarian cancer do not have signs or symptoms until disease spreads to the upper abdomen. 70% of patients present with advanced disease. Symptoms for early stage ovarian cancer can include nonspecific pelvic discomfort, urinary frequency and constipation which are caused by an enlarging pelvic mass. With advanced disease, patients experience abdominal pain, bloating, anorexia, nausea and constipation.

The best tumor marker for ovarian cancer is CA 125. Minor elevations in CA 125 can also be seen in endometriosis, benign tumors, fibroids and in pregnant and postpartum women. In addition, moderate elevation of CA 125 can be seen in other adnocarcinoma such as breast and endometrial cancer. The sensitivity of CA 125 is 70% to 80% and the specificity is 98.6% to 99.4%. However, in the average risk population with low prevalence of ovarian cancer, the false positive can be unacceptably high.

Lung Cancer Secrets Revealed Click here

The National Cancer Institute recommends screening for ovarian female cancer with known genetic syndromes associated with this disease and for women with strong family history. Routine screening of women without family history of ovarian cancer is not recommended. The known genetic syndromes include hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome associated with BRCA 1, BRCA 2 and Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer Syndrome (HNPCC). The absolute risk of ovarian cancer in the presence of either BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation ranges from 16% to 60%. For patients with HNPCC syndrome, the lifetime risk of ovarian cancer is 9% to 12%.

Epithelial cancer accounts for about 90% of ovarian cancers. Common histologies include serous, mucinous, endometroid, transitiona and clear cell types. Germ cell tumors include dysgerminoma, endodermal sinus tumor, malignant teratoma embryonal carcinoma or primary choriocarcinoma. Stromal tumors include granulose tumor or Sertoli-Leydig tumor.

Upon initial presentation, surgery is used for confirmation and staging the cancer. Stage I disease is confined to one or both ovaries. Stage II involves one or both ovaries with extension to the pelvic viscera. Stage III is associated with implants on the abdominopelvic wall or the serosal surface of the liver or involves small bowel or omentum. Stage IV disease involves distant metastasis. The 5 year survival for stage IA disease and grade 1 or 2 histology is greater than 90%. For high risk stage I disease and stage II disease, 5 year survival is 80%. For patients with stage III disease after optimal debulking, 5 year survival is 20% to 30%. This reduces to be less than 10% for stage III patients with suboptimal debulking and stage IV disease.

Stage I ovarian cancer with favorable prognostic features can be treated with surgery alone. For women with high risk, early stage cancer (Stage I grade 3 or stage II disease), adjuvant chemotherapy with platinum based agents show an 11% improvement in progression free survival and 8% improvement in overall survival. For stage III and IV disease, the current standard of care include maximal attempt at surgical cytoreduction followed by chemotherapy with platinum based agents.

Optimal debulking is an important part in the treatment of cancer in the ovaries. Retrospective data have shown that survival is better for women who receive chemotherapy in the presence of low volume disease. In the setting where optimal surgical cytoreduction cannot be achieved, an alternative approach is for the patient to receive chemotherapy up front. For patients who have a partial response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, it may be appropriate to attempt surgical removal of macroscopic disease at that time.

As for the standard of care in chemotherapy for advanced ovarian-type cancer, studies have shown that paclitaxel/cisplatin combination is superior to cyclophosphamide/cisplatin combination. Later studies showed that carboplatin/paclitaxel is at least as effective as cisplatin/paclitaxel.

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is an appealing approach for treating a disease that is largely confined in the peritoneal space. GOG 172 which was a phase III clinical trials demonstrated that this regional approach resulted in superior progression free survival and overall survival when compared with the intravenous approach alone. The disadvantage of this approach includes local toxicity, and requirement for intraperitoneal catheter placement.

Because of the high recurrence rate in patients with advanced ovarian cancer, the issue of whether consolidation chemotherapy may improve time to progression and overall survival was examined in a phase III trial comparing 3 and 12 cycles of taxol. Progression free survival favored the 12 cycle arm. However, overall survival was not different between the two arms. Therefore, the oncologist needs to discuss with the patient and allow them to decide whether the improved progression free survival justifies toxicities including peripheral neuropathy and alopecia.

For many patients with advanced ovarian cancer who have an initial treatment response, disease relapses at a later time. The treatment of patients with recurrent disease or resistant disease needs to be individualized. For people with long treatment free interval, similar drugs many be reused. There are also a number of single agent drugs with activity in ovarian cancer. These include altretamine, bevacizumab, docetaxel, etoposide, gemcitabine, liposomal doxorubicin, paclitaxel, tamoxifen, topotecan and vinorelbine.

Radiation can also play a role in the palliation of some patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. Symptoms such as pain from growing pelvic mass or bone metastasis can be palliated. Very rarely cerebral metastasis can develop which can also be treated with radiation.

The best treatment of ovarian cancer needs a team approach between the primary care physician, gynecological oncology surgeon, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. As more chemotherapeutic agents become available and as we further understand the biology of epithelial ovarian cancer, we hope to further improve the overall survival and quality of life of our patients.

Effects Of Lung Cancer Treatments: The Terrible Side Effects of Lung Cancer Therapies

The effects of lung cancer on the patient’s body can differ according to the type and stage of the disease. However, studies are now focused towards the impact of treatments intended to cure the disease in patients.

Although these have been recognized as temporary effects only, it still does produce enough good to the health of the patients.

What Are The Effects of Lung Cancer Treatments?

Since the treatment for the disease is essential to keep the cancer cells under control, several patients have overlooked the possible harm it can bring to their health. These are some of the more common treatment options for lung cancer.

1) Surgical Treatment

Effects of lung cancer treatment such as surgeries can often bring in more harm to the patient. Since it is a major operation, it exposes your chest area into the possibility of collecting air and fluid into it.

Among the side effects known for lung cancer patients who have recently undergone surgery is difficulty in turning over, deep breathing, or even coughing. Since patients typically go through these activities, recovery might be slow.

Activities such as deep breathing or coughing are essential elements in recovery since they enable extra air or fluid out of your lung area.

Among the most common conditions cited shortly after undergoing lung cancer surgery include pain in your chest area or arms, and shortness of breath. It might need a week or two before a patient can find relief from such side effects.

2) Chemotherapy

When it comes to the side effects produced by this type of treatment for lung cancer, it varies according to the type and amount of drugs given the patient.

The hazard comes in since chemotherapy does not solely target cancer cells, but also affect normal cells as well. Below are common side effects experienced by patients treated with chemotherapy:

•    vomiting/nausea
•    feeling of fatigue
•    presence of mouth sores
•    hair loss

3) Radiation Therapy

The effects of lung cancer treatments such as radiation therapy stems from the fact that, like chemotherapy, it affects your normal cells. As opposed to the type of drug used in chemotherapy, this one depends on the particular part of the body being treated and the amount of dosage.

Common side effects include the following: sore or dry throat, hard time swallowing, changes in the skin of the area of treatment, appetite loss, headaches, problems with memory retention, etc.

4) Photodynamic Therapy

This particular therapy sets its limits on the normal routine activities of a patient who has undergone this treatment. For six weeks or more proceeding the treatment, the patient’s skin and eyes becomes hypersensitive to light.

Therefore, direct contact with sunlight must be avoided if possible, even indoors. Hence, protective clothing must be worn if the patient were to go outside.

Other entailing conditions of photodynamic therapy include difficulty swallowing, coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.

Although the conditions cited above are often considered temporary, they must not be taken lightly. Instead, you need to see your doctor if you notice some of the side effects of lung cancer treatments continue to persist.

Mesothelioma cancers cells develop and multiply more quickly than normal and ordinary cells, but also some normal and ordinary cells also multiply rapidly, most particularly the ones in the system of reproduction, digestive tract, and follicles of hair. The side effects happens as a result of the damage done to normal and ordinary cells from treatment of mesothelioma cancers.

The kind of side effects mesothelioma patients pass through and the severity of the effects, relies on the kind of chemotherapy mesothelioma patients are undergoing, the pharmacology of the drugs, dosage administered and how their body reacts to this type of treatment of mesothelioma. Types of pain Before chemotherapy treatment begins and starts, mesothelioma patients will be told to sign an agreeement form. Before signing the form, make sure your doctor gives you adequate and all informations of all the facts as regarding the chemotherapy treatment he/she will be administering, also to include necessary and adequate information about the chemotherapy drug or combination of chemotherapy drugs to be administered, the side effects, and risks involved in using each chemotherapy drugs, the amount of chemotherapy treatment of mesothelioma you will undergo and how frequent, and whether you will under a hospital stay, or admission or as an outpatient basis.

Anti-nausea treatment for chemotherapy mesothelioma patients also play a vital role in the treatment of mesothelioma cancers.

Nausea is often times a side effect of mesothelioma treatments.

Mild and temporary side effects such as nausea and vomiting, anorexia, loss of hair, and mouth sores. If some blood producing cells are damaged, there could be low blood cell count. This could also lead to a substantial or high risk of infection, blood klotting process could be impaired after minor cuts or injuries, and experiencing exhaustion or shortness of breath could also be seen… get more info …

Chemotherapy Hair Loss Prevention – Battling Side Effects

A cancer patient often finds that he has more than just cancer to worry over. When undergoing chemotherapy treatment, he has to worry about other side effects like hair loss. Chemotherapy is supposed to fight cancer. So why is it that hair loss occurs during treatment? Chemotherapy attempts to kill cancer cells with radiation.

The amount of radiation a patient is exposed to, depends on the seriousness of the condition. If cancer is already in late stages, chances are, an aggressive treatment plan may be necessary. When chemotherapy is taking place, cancer cells are prevented from spreading. This is how the treatment discern cancer cells from normal healthy cells. Unfortunately, the discernment process is not a hundred percent accurate. So healthy cells get damaged as well. In addition, hair follicle cells tend to regenerate more quickly than normal cells. In this aspect, it is similar to cancer cells.

That\’s why chemotherapy damage hair follicles as well, and hair loss starts to occur. How serious will the hair loss condition be? The answer is not a straightforward one. It all depends on the intensity of the treatment, and the duration. If large doses of medication are taken, accompanied with prolonged periods of chemotherapy, it is very likely that the patient may loss all his hair. However, for less serious cases, the hair may thin temporarily. In extremely mild cases, there may not be a noticeable effect at all.

Hair loss is just a side effect of chemotherapy treatment. Fortunately, it is something that the patient can take measures to cope with. Here are some suggestions on how to cope with hair loss. Wearing a hair piece – This is by far, the most common approach. There are no additional medication that needs to be taken, and it takes care of the problem immediately. Hair pieces are rather fashionable these days, so can patients should not be afraid to try them on. Wear a head gear – Now is the time to be a fashion freak.

Try on some head gear like scarves, hats, etc. There are many options available, and you will have lots of fun shopping for the head gear. Seeking hair loss treatment – For mild cancer cases, you may want to seek hair loss treatment. For example, you may be asked to take additional health supplements or apply hair lotion to help prevent hair loss from taking place to quickly. Your hair may still thin, but the rate is remarkably reduced.

When the treatment is over, your hair will grow back naturally. In addition, you can take other less drastic measures to help protect your help. Use a mild shampoo to prevent breakage. Do not try to adopt ambitious styles for your hair during chemotherapy. For instance, don\’t perm or dye your hair.

Side effects of chemotherapy while getting treated for mesothelioma

Chemotherapy is one of the few options that doctors avail of while treating mesothelioma as it is a form of cancer. Even though chemotherapy is obviously not the cure for mesothelioma, it definitely aids in prognosis of the disease. Chemotherapy involves the use of one or more anti cancer drugs taken in either in the form of pills orally or in the case of an aggravated stage of mesothelioma, the drugs are injected directly into the cavity of the concerned part of the body. These drugs help to damage the growth of the cancer cells but along with those, they tend to kill healthy cells as well. Luckily this damage is often repaired quickly but sadly this method causes a lot of discomfort within the patient’s body.

Chemotherapy even though is the most commonly used treatment for curing cancer; it is known to cause a number of severe side effects in almost every patient who undergoes chemotherapy. These widely seen side effects often include tremendous hair loss, feeling of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, anemia, hemorrhaging etc. chemotherapy also happens to cause several complicated side effects inside the growth of cancer. It is as commonly noticed in cases of mesothelioma as well. We often notice patients suffering from aggravated mesothelioma and undergoing chemotherapy experience secondary neoplasms, which are offshoots of cancer that grow from the original tumours but their growth is redirected due to the introduction of anti cancer drugs which interfere with their normal growth.

Also, chemotherapy tends to usually increase the chances of poisonous reactions in the blood stream, liver and kidneys, instigating the potential deadly characteristic of chemotherapy treatment. With the implication of chemotherapy, the immunity of the human body is suppressed by decreasing the number of antibodies in the bloodstream. Any kind of illnesses or infections can pose great threat to patients who are being treated with chemotherapy. Other side effects like mouth sores in combination with the nausea and intestinal discomfort cause many patients to stop eating a healthy diet. Chemotherapy is thus a combination of pros and cons, the benefits that you cannot avail of without the damages.

In fact recent studies have shown the chemotherapy is not even the best option to treat mesothelioma because by the time the disease is usually diagnosed, it is too late and the side effects of chemotherapy outweigh the discomfort caused by the disease. The only effective solution to treating mesothelioma is to detect the problem early but be sure that even though the final disaster can be delayed, there is no amount of drugs and therapies that can completely cure the disease yet. However hope is not lost that soon there will be cures to deal with the problem of mesothelioma without having to accept side effects like one has to with the availing of chemotherapy.

If you have been suffering from mesothelioma and chemotherapy has not worked in your case, then maybe the only option left for you is to get in touch with an attorney who is concerned with asbestos related litigation because even though you cannot do better for yourself, you can save the life of others from the hands of those who wronged you.

Understanding Chemotherapy and its Side Effects

Cancer patients are not new to the term chemotherapy. It plays a major role in treating their cancer. In the past, chemotherapy referred to the use of any drug or medication to treat disease. For example, the ingestion of antibiotics is a type of chemotherapy. Today, however, the word chemotherapy has become exclusively associated with cytotoxic chemicals used for treating cancer.

The history of chemotherapy traces back to medical observations in World War I. Soldiers who were exposed to chemical warfare, Sulfur Mustard, suffered from the lowering of their white blood cells, especially lymphocytes. Following that observation, Nitrogen Mustard, a similar and yet less toxic agent, was used in patients with high white blood cells (lymphoid leukemia) and then in lymphomas. Nitrogen Mustard indeed lowered the count of lymphocytes and assisted in the management of lymphoid cancers. Today, this drug still plays a major role in the treatment of Hodgkin’s Disease.

If one is considering chemotherapy for treating cancer, there are always possible adverse effects in undergoing this procedure. Although chemotherapy is relatively simple and painless, it has risks. The most common side effects of chemotherapy include neutropenia (a low white blood cell count), anemia (a low red blood cell count), thrombocytopenia (a low blood platelet count), depression, hair loss, nausea, and vomiting.

Some people never experience nausea or vomiting. Others are nauseated every day of treatment. Many people describe having “stomach awareness” — a condition when loses appetite even if there are not symptoms of stomach discomfort or nausea. Some people have nausea that lingers for more than a week after a chemotherapy session. Thankfully, these side effects can almost always be controlled, or at least substantially reduced, by the use of a variety of drugs.

Antiemetic drugs act centrally on the gastrointestinal system to suppress symptoms of nausea. Drugs that act primarily on the central nervous system receptors or the vestibular system include butyrophenones (e.g., haloperidol), phenothiazines (e.g., prochlorperazine, chlorpromazine), antihistamines (e.g., cyclizine) and anticholinergics (e.g., hyoscine). Antiemetic drugs with direct effects on the gastrointestinal system include metoclopramide, domperidone and octreotide (an analog of somatostatin). Antagonists of 5-HT3 receptors (i.e., ondansetron and tropisetron) have both central and gastrointestinal effects, drugs that are considered to be effective but quite expensive. Specific medications should be selected to match the drug effect to the cause of the vomiting. Other matters to be considered in drug administration include the side-effect profile, route, timing, form of administration, cos of the drug, and a variety of patient-specific factors.

Nausea makes a cancer patient experience anxiety, making their discomfort more pronounced. The normal uncertainty and worries that accompany the first chemotherapy session adds to the difficulty experienced by a cancer patient. The same emotional factors that can cause nausea before a test or seeing a doctor can also lead to more nausea before chemotherapy. Plus, anxiety can cause indigestion and heartburn, which can make matters worse. Constipations and coughing due to bronchitis or a bad cold can also contribute to nausea. Sometimes, nausea can also be a side effect of pain medications.

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. But they aren’t inevitable. There are newer nausea and vomiting treatments that can help prevent these side effects. The doctor and patient can take steps to prevent or decrease nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and to make the patient more comfortable during the cancer treatment.

The side effects of chemotherapy come about because cancer cells aren’t the only rapidly dividing cells in the body. The cells in the blood, mouth, intestinal tract, nose, nails, vagina, and hair are also undergoing constant, rapid division. This means that the chemotherapy is going to affect them too. Before chemotherapy starts, it’s important to understand nausea and all the factors that can affect it. By being informed and working closely with a health care team, perhaps one can avoid nausea and vomiting entirely — making the process of beating cancer less difficult for a patient to endure.
